Martin Parr. RIP.
A brilliant photographer
Martin Parr (23 May 1952 – 6 December 2025) was a groundbreaking British documentary photographer whose vividly colored and keenly observant work transformed how we see everyday life. Born in Epsom, Surrey, Parr became one of the most influential voices in contemporary photography by capturing the humor, contradictions, and cultural rhythms of ordinary people, consumer culture, and leisure society. His early breakthrough came with The Last Resort (1983–85), a deeply human and ironic look at working-class holidaymakers, and he went on to explore global tourism, class, and consumerism in projects such as The Cost of Living and Small World.
